In England, women were not granted the right to vote until 1918 (for women over 30) and it was not until 1928 that the vote was extended to women age 21 and over so that they were on the same level as men.

Barrie wrote Peter Pan in 1904, years before women even had the right to vote. The role of the women in Peter Pan has evolved a lot through the years. As the importance of women in real life expanded, so did their roles in Peter Pan. Her argument is very sound, but can be expanded further from a stage of life to talk about the role of women in literature-especially the classic story of Peter Pan. As Zohar Shavit says in her article “The Concept of Childhood and Children’s Folktales,” before literature could be written for children, “childhood itself had to come into existence and receive recognition and legitimation as a distinct time period in the life of the individual” (130).
